Jacob Heringman

American-born lutenist Jacob Heringman has established himself as one of the world's most respected and most innovative solo lute players, and as a much sought-after ensemble player performing regularly throughout Europe and North and South America, and making many CD and radio recordings of medieval and renaissance music with leading English ensembles, including The Rose Consort of Viols, Fretwork, Musicians of the Globe, The Kings Singers, The New London Consort, Virelai and The Dufay Collective. Jacob's playing is also to be heard on the soundtracks of many Hollywood films (most recently, Harry Potter III and Kingdom of Heaven), and occasionally on pop albums (most recently, Joni Mitchell's Travelogue). I had him first when we worked on a series of lute song recitals, and I am delighted he will come to East Neuk Festival for a recital of arguably the two greatest lute masters - Dowland and Milan. Expect an hour of absorbing, soft hued, candlelit delight.

Shiela Chandra

Sheila Chandra first found fame as an actress - in Grange Hill - but I heard her first performing an astonishing piece of mouth-music inspired by tabla playing. That was 15 years ago, and she has continued to follow her own path musically, exploring aspects of Asian and European vocal traditions en route. Her fascination with drones has brought her close to the piping traditions of Scotland, and she had a great success with her recording of McCrimmond's Lament. Her performance at East Neuk Festival contributes to a mini-strand of contrasting vocal traditions - the others being English (The Orlando Consort and Tuvan (Huun Huur Tu). They are programmed to complement and contrast with each other.
