Huun Huur Tu

Huun huur tu

There are four quartets in this year's Festival, and the most unusual must be Huun Huur Tu. They hail from the Steppes of Central Asia and play and sing using an ancient technique which involves overtone singing. In this way a single singer can sound several notes simultaneously often at extremes of the vocal range. It is a thrilling sound and we have two very different events by them or you to enjoy.

On Friday night they are giving a straight concert (paired with Sheila Chandra) then on Saturday afternoon they join the Orlando Consort in the weird and atmospheric setting of a Hardened Aircraft Shelter on RAF Leuchars. This building was constructed during the Cold War to protect jets and manages to combine the modern brutality of a defensive concrete structure with the acoustic of a medieval cathedral. It's going to sound wild.

Shiela Chandra

Sheila Chandra first found fame as an actress - in Grange Hill - but I heard her first performing an astonishing piece of mouth-music inspired by tabla playing. That was 15 years ago, and she has continued to follow her own path musically, exploring aspects of Asian and European vocal traditions en route. Her fascination with drones has brought her close to the piping traditions of Scotland, and she had a great success with her recording of McCrimmond's Lament. Her performance at East Neuk Festival contributes to a mini-strand of contrasting vocal traditions - the others being English (The Orlando Consort and Tuvan (Huun Huur Tu). They are programmed to complement and contrast with each other.
