Llyr Williams is a rare pianist. The word maverick suggests too much flashy individualism to describe him well, but he has something of that about him. His playing is as distinctive as it is commanding. His concerts at East Neuk Festival feature music from Schubert to Janacek - approximately a century of works all written by composers who were themselves pianists. Here two lunchtime concerts offer intriguing pairings. Schubert and Janacek in one; Chopin and Debussy in the other. On the Saturday of the festival he collaborates with Dr Richard Holloway in a poetic pairing of Virginia Woolf and Debussy. At times it seems as though Woolf orchestrated words just as Debussy painted music. Both artists loved the sea, and this performance features some of their most memorable seascapes. As grand finale, Williams joins Alexander Janiczek and David Watkin for Mendelssohn's joyous Trio in D Minor.
