In this age of globalization, one hand-wringing lament you hear all too often is that the distinctive musical accents of different countries and regions are becoming homogenized and bland. The playing of the Skampa Quartet is one of the best pieces of evidence to dispute that claim. Their national identity is deeply important to them, and they bring an instinctive grasp of language and idiom to their matchless interpretations of the great works of Dvorak, Smetana, Janacek. They are freed by their tradition, though, not bound by it - as anyone who has heard their Beethoven will testify. This year we hear them both in Czech repertoire and joining the Eroica Quartet for what promises to be a fine Mendelssohn Octet.
