MENDELSSOHN Quartet Op 13
MENDELSSOHN Quartet Op 44 No 2

Calidore Quartet

For many contemporaries, Beethoven’s late quartets were impenetrably difficult music – some considered them barely music at all. Yet the teenage Mendelssohn seized them with passion and their influence is felt throughout his own quartets, not least in the two pieces in this concert. Op 13, written in the months following Beethoven’s death, has such maturity and mastery it is hard to believe it’s the work of an 18 year old. 10 years on, Mendelssohn was on his honeymoon in the Black Forest when he wrote Op 44 No 2. It holds hints of other works: the lovely opening of his Violin Concerto is kindred to the start of this piece, and the scherzo offers a magical variation on the skittering fairies of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
