TCHAIKOVSKY Valse Sentimentale
RACHMANINOV Cello Sonata Op 19

Julian Steckel cello
Joseph Moog piano

After a short Fantasie by Beethoven, this is an all-Russian affair and the work of friends. Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov knew and admired each other’s work, and there was a third man in the friendship – the cellist Anatoliy Brandukov. He premiered the Tchaikovsky cello pieces we hear, was best man at Rachmaninov’s wedding, and had this sonata dedicated to him. Noted for his beautiful, expressive tone, you can sense his presence in the music – musically, the duo of Rachmaninov and Brandukov was a meeting of equals. The sonata was written around the same time as Rachmaninov’s second piano concerto and shares its tenderness and mellowness, which continues to make it one of the world’s best-loved works.

“…he won the hearts of the audience with his skilful, polished play that was oozing sensitivity to music and instrument with every note. He has magical hands that create superb musicianship and he seems to have everything in place: technical skill, sensitivity, charisma and intuition… downright magisterial…”
