Throughout this year’s ENF, Christian Zacharias celebrates the music of Schumann and, in this concert, joins the Pavel Haas Quartet in the Piano Quintet. Schumann dedicated it to his wife, Clara, who pronounced it “splendid, full of vigor and freshness”. Clara was due to give the premiere, but when she fell ill, who should step into the breach but Mendelssohn!
A line that starts with Schumann then leads to his protégé Brahms and directly on to Dvořák. Pavel Haas Quartet is among Dvořák’s most thrilling interpreters, and the American Quartet is undeniably one of his most infectiously enjoyable pieces. It belongs to the same period as the ‘New World’ Symphony and shares its fusion of Czech tradition with an added freshness and vitality that suggests discovery of the New World.

“The Pavel Haas Quartet excels in composers from beyond its native Czech Republic… but give the players a programme of Czech and Slovak composers and they will never sound more at home.”
